Hello Toomsters!

Are you excited to make a difference with us this Tuesday at Senator Toomey's office at 200 CHESTNUT STREET in PHILADELPHIA?

While all eyes may be turned toward 2020, we have a very important election coming up in 2019! The election next month could be a game changer, with everything from the Philadelphia mayoral seat, all 17 seats on the city council, all three seats on the city commission, county sheriff, register of wills, trial court judges, and municipal judges up for grabs (https://ballotpedia.org/City_elections_in_Philadelphia,_Pennsylvania_(2019). But Philadelphia isn’t the only place where #ElectionsMatter if we want to #TurnPABlue. In Montgomery county, superior and common pleas judges, county commissioner, and row officers including, District Attorney, Sheriff, Treasurer, etc. will be on the ballot (https://www.mcdems.org/candidates.html), and in Delco, it is also the chance to continue turning Delco blue for the first time in decades. With the key seats on county council on the ballot we could finally win the majority and break the GOP stranglehold on the purse and their penchant for no-bid contract awards to donor businesses. (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/9/19/1886406/-In-Pennsylvania-s-Little-Blue-Pockets-the-fight-for-2020-has-already-started?fbclid=IwAR24UZd56rSWwYwB03b5Qw1NNPPiRqh2JlxQ1C1ZmwwZCcn4-Bi7psI9u0Q).

With so much on the line, it is important that we not only push to GOTV both next month and in 2020, but we do everything we can to ensure that vote is secure and protected. Sadly, we do not have assurance that our vote is protected statewide or nationally. In this thread, election security expert Jennifer Cohn writes extensively about our insecure voting systems: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1144257849369026561.html?fbclid=IwAR2wjCDSS4KolF92VOXaBredj2sTGFKqoBg597w-uM8nuZ5GC-zZut0DEr0. This Mother Jones article highlights just how vulnerable voting machines which are used in dozens of states are to hacking and manipulation: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/09/defcon-2019-hacking-village/?fbclid=IwAR1IeVtdfpZNGjI1mD4mmzEjaChfKrSzEyvCY3IXljiMqGnUMEu6iEpcIfQ. And hackers are not the only threat our elections face: since SCOTUS gutted the Voting Right’s Act, more than 1600 polling places have closed (https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/09/report-more-than-1600-polling-places-have-closed-since-the-supreme-court-gutted-the-voting-rights-act/), and some states, like Ohio, are purging voter rolls of hundreds of thousands of people simply because they had not voted in six years https://www.dispatch.com/news/20190930/vast-majority-of-180000-ohio-voters-purged-because-they-didnt-vote. Additionally, while we finally saw some action in the Senate on election security, with the passage of a bill to provide $250 million to the states for election security, with no mandate for hand-marked paper ballots or other guidelines regarding how that money should be spent, our elections are still under threat (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/06/opinion/letters/election-security.html).

This week, we will be joined by Boris Dirnbach, a volunteer with Progressive Democrats of America to affect national change and Steering Committee member of Neighborhood Networks (www.phillynn.org); Tim Brown, Project Organizer for Philly Neighborhood Network (https://actionnetwork.org/groups/philadelphia-neighborhood-networks); Vicki Miller, founder and leader of Indivisible Philadelphia (https://www.facebook.com/IndivisiblePhiladelphia/); and Andrea Koplove of Turn PA Blue (https://turnpablue.org). They will speak to us about what we can do to support GOTV for November 5th and beyond, as well as what we can do to help fight to make and keep our elections secure.

CALL TO ACTION:
*Call your House member to demand publics hearings on H.R.2660 Election Security Act which requires voter-verified (hand marked or marked through nontabulating marking device) paper ballots: https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/2660/text

*Canvass and phone bank to #TurnPABlue:
https://www.mobilize.us/turnpablue/

*Volunteer for Indivisible Philadelphia to help GOTV at one of their upcoming events: bit.ly/Volunteer4IP

*Check out Protect Our Vote Philly and learn how you can support the effort to pressure the City Commissioners to buy voting machines that use voter-produced paper ballots: https://www.facebook.com/POVPhilly/

Thank you so much for supporting our efforts to make our representatives listen to our concerns. We're so happy to have you on board!

In solidarity,
