Hi there Tuesday with Toomey Supporters,

Life. Liberty. Happiness. That is what we are supposed to celebrate this week. But what do those words, those values, mean when we’re faced with an administration that has shown a shocking disregard for all of these principles?

From TWT’s own Terry Baraldi: “The U.S. may be the only first-world country that has more laws protecting the representation (a piece of cloth) than the humans it’s meant to represent.

The flag is a rallying cry and call to arms...but the flag doesn’t fight and die on foreign soil. The flag symbolizes what we fight to protect...but the flag doesn’t sacrifice its sons and daughters. The flag is an emblem of the blood, sweat and tears that keep us free. The humans standing under it are the embodiment. They, all races and religions, each and every beating heart, are whom we honor with that pledge.

Why is this so hard to grasp?

When someone violates or destroys a flag, any flag, they’re not angry at a piece of cloth...they are railing against what it represents...or fails to. Like liberty and justice FOR ALL.

If the flag and pledge mean anything to me, it’s as a reminder of promises within our reach but as yet unfulfilled; that we as a people are still a work in progress.

For those who can’t seem to separate the symbol from the reality, here’s an idea:

At the next occasion for the anthem or pledge...close your eyes and, instead of Old Glory, picture the face of a soldier you know, possibly even love. Hold and honor that vision. Speak to that vision. Maybe that will begin to reframe the rote words into a deeper, truer meaning of patriotism…the promise and the reality of America.”

This week, we want to hear from you about what life, liberty, and happiness mean and what we can do to better live up to those values.

BRING: A letter targeting any one (or more) of the current crises affecting life, liberty, and happiness in our country and tell Senator Toomey why it is important for him to speak out against them. Letters in envelopes will not be accepted by the Senator’s staff.

CTA: We cannot claim to value life, liberty, and happiness while we continue to imprison and harm immigrants and refugees who come to our border. We must continue to speak out and ask our representatives to act immediately.

Call Senator Toomey and tell him why it is important for him to speak out against the human rights abuses at the border and urge him to support a number of bills currently awaiting action (please use this link for the names and detailed information on these bills: http://www.patogether.org/end-abuse---scripts.html)

Call your congressional representative and tell them to use their oversight powers to check this administration and end these inhumane policies and tactics. Link to scripts here: http://www.patogether.org/end-abuse---scripts.html
