Abington for Peace, a local group of activists consisting of Amy Martin from the Women’s March on Philadelphia, Michele Cooper from We The Women Design and Elizabeth Lee from Orange Wave for Gun Safety have partnered with Abington Friends Meeting and Abington Friends School to host a vigil for peace Monday August 12th from 6:30pm -8:30pm. The event will be held in the Grove at Abington Friends Meeting, 520 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046.
Two years ago 300 community members gathered at Crestmont Park following the tragedies that occurred in Charlottesville. Once again our community feels compelled to come together in direct response to the spike in mass shootings and white supremacist rhetoric coming from the White House, we will gather to show solidarity with our neighbors and those whose lives have been forever changed by gun violence. We believe that now is the time for common sense gun reform. We cannot make this our new normal!
We will begin at 6:30pm with a moment of silence followed by speakers ranging from local elected officials including State Representative Ben Sanchez and Montgomery County Commissioner Valerie Arkoosh, to organizations fighting for gun reform like Cease Fire PA and Orange Wave for Gun Safety, to community members directly affected by gun violence and systemic bias.
Guests are welcome to bring their own blanket or lawn chair as well as candles for a moment of silence.
